I'm trying to steer away from the vbportal and vbadvanced portal's and go with something a little..........different. But I need a little help. What I'm trying to make is something similar to these...

Can anybody tell me where I would go about finding one of these?

You should be easily able to get that look with a prepackaged index page like vbportal or vbadvanced with template modifications.

Generally I stay away form pre-made portals but I have to say that vBadvanced is a good product. It intergrates so well with vB and the possibilities are endless. It takes so much out of the coding that it allows people like me who love templating to concentrate on that. I'm heavily considering to use it.
