sendmail <--> PM Gateway

Is anyone working on a gateway which will process mail to and from the vB2 Private Messaging facility?

I think this can be done by forwarding all incoming mails to specific script , say, mail.php, and this script will forward each email to the corrospodning PM account.

If this feature is added to VB its gonna be a real break through

if you mean like webmail. I did try this at one time but didn't have time to work on it, and i was using the pm hack for 1.15 not 2.0.

I am going to try to create it when i am done with my other projects.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

As I see it, we'll need to pass all incoming emails through a script and then send the text as a PM to the correct user (and send any incorrectly addressed mails to the admin).

The difficulty is making the script that the incoming emails are sent to. Mailing list programs like majordomo pass all incoming emails (to a certain address) through a script, so that it can subscribe and unsubscribe people from the lists.

This system would need server root access (as you'll have to modify sendmail's email routing for a particular domain).

The question I have is:
- What language do we have to program this script in? Because it's run by the server when an email is received, I don't know if we can do it in php.

Anyone any thoughts, or experience in this area?

If you have access to (or can have your webhost install) Procmail then it would not be hard at all to pass incomming email's to a php script.

I currently use procmail for a ton of things, and maybe after VB is out of Beta will look into creating what you all want. But according to the powers that be the PM part of VB has some major changes on the way so I don't want to create something now and then have to start all over every time a new beta comes out.
