Main menu customization

Okay, I'd like to take the main menu (user cp/faq/memberlist/logout/etc) and 1)move it to a different position and 2) make them images.

One way to describe this is on the top - make user cp something like the "Home" tab on this page, etc.

One site - the only one I've actually found what I'm looking for actually, is here. How do I make a main menu like that?

I know I have to edit the header and navbar, but I'm pretty much new to this and lost.

Guidance/help appreciated.
