i am new to this stuff, so i may sound a bit ignorant,
i am looking for a hack to enable private messaging on my board, can anyone help?

What version do you have? VBulletin 2.0 already has private messaging in it- no hacking needed. I'd definitely recommend upgrading. I just did, and the new features are awesome!
