As a "coder", the whole plugin and hook system still confuses me somewhat.

Most of the things I try that would work when editing the source code, tend not to work via a plugin..

You can get most things working, It just needs a bit of thinking where to place the Code

My fetch_musername hook is still denied, which is annoying. There is still no way to add username markup before the usergroup markup is added.

Not sure if it already exist/will be, but a hook after the postbit is evaluated would be nice.
