And anyhow, the board is an all-purpose discussion board with a rather tight knit community which likes nothing better than to argue with one another. I'd appreciate any tips people could give to help me attract new members

Well, i like the simple theme in most aspects, the portal should stay. It is used to bring the latest events and happenings of the forums (Calendar, Posts, New Polls, etc) to one centralised area, makes everything alot easier in some aspects. But, alot of people do not like them, take a vote with your members, take it down if yes outvotes no.

Then, the colors do not match at all, I really dont like how there is red cats, blue navbits, red/black header, and green buttons. Pick 1-2 good color varients and stick to them, makes everything look ALOT more professional. I can suggest red and black (with white for the pg element).

Other than that, it looks like it is coming along well.
