Creating a tracker subroutine

Hi guys,

Just wondering about some inspiration about creating a tracking subroutine for my forums.
Okay, I have a sources menu in my navbar, I have created a file to track the amount of clicks each link gets. I know where to put the main code, but I am wondering about a few things:

• Do I use php code, or javascript (using the on-click command)to call in the sub routine?
• Should I use the SQL database to hold the information?
• I have to refrence the object in the navbar, any hints on this as Im a little bit lost
• And finally, do you think this is a much more complicated task to integrate it with vbulletin then a guy with very basic coding skills can handle?
