I have a user's sex as a custom profile field. If a user signs up as a woman, I'd like to restrict their ability to post in just women's forums, but grant them read access to all the forums. Is this possible?

Yes. It's possible. There's a hack around that checks a custom profile field and puts the member in the user group based on the contents of that field.

Then you set your permissions by user group.

Look around. You'll find it.
