I am looking for a simple hack, so all IMG tags appear as links to guests while the members see the actual image.

ahhh, ok.

I wanted it so by default all users including guests only saw links and could turn on the image if they had a fast connection after they register.

just wondering then would it not be better to have a cache for members and a cache for guests?
