OK

The avatar hack is having problems with the dHTML and Javascript image selector. The hack itself works, it's just letting people view the image before they pick it is being obnoxious, at least in Netscape. <ilayer> tags don't seem to like being in tables, it would appear. MSIE, on the other hand, has no problems whatsoever with it.

So, what do people think about this idea?

When a user goes to profile, have a link on the page that says "click here to select your avatar" or some such. Clicking on it brings up a small window that the javascript/dHTML -will- work on, letting them select and preview their avatar image, and then save that into their user record, close the window, and get on with editing the rest of their profile.

Thanks to John explaining a little about how his selectors are built, the admin editing part of avatar images is now fixed.

I'll be releasing v0.9 once I get the private avatar functions working. Also I hope to have a way, like usergroup usertitles, to assign an avatar image to a usergroup.

Another idea:
User editing of usertitle.
Have it toggleable so only certain usergroups can edit their usertitle (e.g. moderators only, certain number of posts)?

Hi Kath,

just for your information:

As i used ubb i've displayed easily twelve grafix (60 x 60 pixel) in a simple table with radio-buttons and the user could choose one at registration or later in his profile. Additionally i had a user definable field, so that the user could enter the url to any picture on his webspace. The display of the pics was autosized like in your hack.

Your dhtml/java-stuff looks fine - i've decided to display the pictures without any dhtml/java - cause nobody gets problems in getting a simple table displayed!

I think the avatar-hack should be slight and fast - just display the pics in a table!

Would be great if i could choose in the administration, if it's allowed to see and use an individual field for their own urls or not.

Your idea about the editing of usertitles sounds great - to not forget to scan them through the censoring

Regards,
TB2

the problem with using javascript and/or dHTML is that it leaves a lot of users out. WebTV and iCab (for macs) have limited support for Javascript and none that I know of for DHMTL. Unfortunately I don't know of another way to do it for this type of thing.

I suggested a while back that we allow users to select their own titles, tied into the word censor, of course. I like the idea of tying it to the number of posts except that it encourages people to make a lot of senseless spam type posts to achieve that number. Also, how would you make it to keep them from getting the reserved Mod and Admin titles?

I've never actually seen WebTV to find out it's capabilities/limitations before. I'll have to rethink on that.

I don't suppose anyone knows what browser type it identifies itself as?

Adding in censoring to user-edited usertitles isn't too difficult. Adding in a moderator/admin title block is a good idea, though. How about a control panel setting to be able to list the names you want to "reserve"?
