how do you attract ppl to your forum?

Hey I recently opened a car forum.
And Ive been wondering how do you get people interested, what are the best advertising strategies?'

So far I have just submited to searchengines and setup a little contest?

any other ideas?

Here are a few things I can think of:

1. Get Linked by as many other sites as possible.
2. Change META Tag info from Vbulletin default
3. Create Robots.txt file
4. Get listed in as many directories as possible
5. Learn from similar sites
6. Use Blogs/Articles on site
7. Use image gallery on site
8. use Archiving system
9. Encourage Referrals

you dont need half of that stuff to attract members and visitors. all you need is promotion and word of mouth advertising
