Why not an htaccess cookie login?

I was browsing through the same threads over and over again looking
for an alternative to 200.00 US for amember pro + vbulletin plugin and
it dawned on me.

Why not use an .htaccess cookie Password Protection that
uses vB user L/P cookie to grant them permission to pass the
site gates?

I have found resource that would do this but the question is...
how or what is the vB cookie?

if we had the user login at the site entrance using vB login
then pass the threhshold of the sites secure area they would be ok
otherwise the .htaccess would popup

can someone help me fogure this out?
