I've never used the server side of Digichat but I can testify as to the client side experience because a board I frequent uses this paid service.

The Java applet that the client downloads is very very buggy. If the client is using certain Microsoft Java Virtual Machine releases the applet will crash. The most recent Sun JVM seems to work. I've never seen the applet work on a Macintosh. I haven't had any success getting it to work on Linux either.

The Digichat client is only stable on a Windoze x86 machine with the Sun JVM installed. The applet is somewhat slow to download and initialize.

User settings in the chat cannot be saved when merged with vB.

The amount of custom user avatars is limited to the # of simultanious chat users in the license. In other words, you have 500 members on your site, you buy a 20 simultanious user license for digichat, you can only have 20 different custom avatars for chat.
