archive & mod_rewrite

I want to shorten the archive url a bit, but I am not familiar with the re_write rules. I've searched around and seen it discussed, but can't find any example of the rule that could be used.

Can anyone help with the rule for changing:

http://www.forum.com/archive/index.php/anything.html

to

http://www.forum.com/a/anything.html

All help appreciated.

would be better to be http://www.forum.com/keyword-t-12345.html

I'm working on this right now. Instead of using Apache's lookback feature and forcing a script to PHP, it will work better with mod_rewrite.

I have:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^arc/(.*)$ archive/index.php/$1 [L]

My archive index page is:

http://forums.mydomain.com.au/arc/

It means the match between
^ and $

is

arc/anything_matched
mirrors to
archive/index.php/anything_matched

[L] means it is a rule, I think it also works without it.
