Don't be stupid: "don't" ban

Let's say that there's an unusually high number of guests online at your forums. Some are shown up as Creating New Thread or Moderating Duties. There are some important things to know:

1. Any guests that look to be doing bad stuff like playing in the mod CP are not really. They are seeing a Permission Denied screen, but vB2 isn't smart enough to show that in WOL.
2. Never, ever ban a guest unless you're sure it's malicious! Why? Because web spiders such as Googlebot and Inktomi are also guests. Banning them accidently would be a form of suicide by idiocy because you wouldn't be listed on Google and other search engines.
3. If you have vB3, you can tell if a guest is a spider or not by viewing its username in WOL. This option might need to be turned on in the admin CP.

Before asking about a specific hostname or IP address, search Google. I guarantee you that somebody else has encountered that IP address or hostname before, and you can easily tell what it is.

Okay, I admit it, I was a bit rude myself in my response.

I have edited my post in that thread, and made a public apology to Ramsy. I will also PM him. I might have misunderstood his reply.

I apologize to you too Regs, if I offended, as well as to all members who may have felt I was unjust or unfair towards them. I sincerely ask for your forgiveness.

I hope we can leave this behind us, and move on.

I've been wondering the same thing. Although the number of bots has reduced to just a few lately, they have been at my site for about 5 days.

Inktomi was on my site for about 7 days, generating several hundreds MB of traffic every day. i was kind of scary at that time
but after these 7 days it stopped and now it only comes about a hundred times a days.
so, don't worry about it, they are just building up their database a little

It's still on my site even today. I don't think it'll ever go away...it must be learning tons about web design

how do you guys see where your users are on the forum? and is there a link to that hack to irritate banned users?
