Where to define new PHP variables?

I did not found where to define new variables. I would want to create a new folder in the /images and to define the root level (which has not been done yet) and can't found how to. For example $stylevar[imgdir] which would point to forums/images/ or whatever else variable to use in the templates.

in your phpinclude_start template for each parent style.
