I feel there is much interest for a news log system like Slashdot that works with VBulletin. I myself have a number of sites I'd like to start up, but don't know which route to take.

I can use PHP Nuke with PHPBB integrated.

Or find some system that will integrate with VB.

I'd prefer option 2 because I already like vB the way it is, and I'm sure Version 2 will blow my mind away.

I know very little about php or writing my own software, but everyone I've talked to says it would be very difficult to get Nuke and vB working together. Here's my proposed solution:

Create an open-source project on SourceForge that would serve as an addition to vBulletin. vSlash would integrate with the member authorization and user database of vBulletin 2. It would be a threaded, moderateable system just like Slashdot, nuke, and all the other weblogs out there. You could not use vSlash without having a licensed version of vBulletin.

I'm posting this to see what kind of interest there is. I wouldn't mind being one of the admins, in charge of organizing efforts together. I don't have the ability to provide anything in the area of coding however. Here are a few questions I would like for any of you to take a stab at:

-If a vSlash application were created would you have an interest in using it?

-Would you be willing to be a developer?

-Would this violate any copyright aspects of vBulletin. vSlash would be GPL, so I essentially see it as one major hack.

-Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

I'm curious to see if there is any serious interest.
Cameron

I already know about BFC Weblog, but I invite you to go take a look at http://www.slashdot.org and see the difference.

I'm talking about a threaded discussion. One you can view by thread, nested, or flat. One that has moderation. Similar idea to BFC, but much more of a modification.

You might as well just create a threaded vB if you're going to go that far.

I don't doubt it would be quite an undertaking. There are a number of weblog clones out there written in php, so it certainly isn't impossible. It can be done, and that's why I proposed a sourceforge project to share the load. Before I go out and ask some of the php coders I know to see if their interested, I thought it best to see if there would even be any interest in the end result.

Again, without knowing alot about php, it seems that piggybacking on the user and authorization features of vB would make development of "vSlash" simpler than by starting from scratch.
