So their answer to being "attacked" is to blindly block hundreds of paying customers from their site with the attitude "oh well... they can figure out what's happening somehow and email us if they want access to what they paid us for and we'll unblock them at our convenience."
Sorry but I have to agree that's really poor and sloppy business practice. What about the customers who didn't know about this site or the address to write to and are just patiently waiting for the website to become operational again while the whole time they're just being blocked from it. Couldn't they have sent an email to all their customers explaining what's going on? Good grief. |

i know how dos attacks work, i know how to write them and everything but still..
worst customer support decision ever 'lets just ban everyone' thats a great solution as for not being their fault yeah it is sites get attacked on a daily basis...its not my fault that their network/servers dont know how to deal with it |

This is crazy people, I recently learned that RC1 was released and I went right to their site to download it, but nooo it wouldn't come up. I'm thinking that the server must be down or something wierd like that. After checking back numerous times I still have not been able to access the website and have not been alerted by anyone that is was "blocking" me or whatever they want to call it.
Just tring to get my forum up-to-date so my members don't face any problems... As for CtrlAltDel's comments, I have to agree with him. They should have sent emails out telling paying customers why they can't download the updates they paid allot of money for. I'll email vbulletin support alright, if they don't block my email that is... |

Me too, no answer. Bad thing because we are in an updating process on our page and I´d really like to use RC1 and see if the integration with Photopost and Reviewpost will work. Recently, I am a little bit pissed because I am now waiting over a week to access vbulletin.com... :-/

Well, being a network guy as my trade, I have to say that arbitrarily blocking whole IP segments just smacks of an amateurish response to a DDOS.
Seeing as I don't know the nature of the DDoS specifically, I won't comment on ways to stop it, yet let paying customers through... but there *are* better ways to handle the situation. If there is absolutely no other solution, then you redirect blocked IPs to a rudimentary webserver explaining what's going on, in plain text, with as few words as possible. It suprises me that the vB team would respond with such a neophyte response when it comes to network security and it is very poor business practise indeed. It makes me wonder at the quality of security they might or might not put in the code. Thankfully, it can be audited by others (or myself), so it's not a great concerne. Totally ridiculous. |
