When you move servers you leave the old site up, but closed, while the DNS resolves...The old site is closed so no one can access it, and the new site is open so when DNS resolves for you, you get the new site...No one ever gets a 404 or a server not found. It's called good planning.
Actually there's a couple of misconceptions.
First, what is happening today has nothing to do with the server move. That is scheduled for tomorrow.
Second, the server move is a physical relocation of the server itself - not a transfer of data from one server to another. The hosting company is moving their servers to a new facility. Consequently there is no 'old site' to provide DNS from.

Any upgrade and/or release is welcome, great if you get it. I'm just repeating the reason for closing as I recall it and it said to move, not release a gamma.
Yes, I am well aware of how to move servers (God knows I've done it enough times). As I said, if they were moving servers, then the entire site would be down (or they would have a "moving servers" type message, which is pretty much the same thing). It doesn't seem likely at all that they would have only disabled/password protected the forums if they were moving servers instead of upgrading to vB Gamma. It's not short sited, it's called logic.
Yeah i posted in the site feedback here about the server moving and blah. Maybe its a disguise!!! Also if they were moving servers, dont forget that vb.org is on the same server, so shouldnt we all not be here at the moment lol
They've set .htaccess password on the forums, which is too conspicuous for just a server move. They don't want to let known the new style, even if all that will be seen is the "This forum is currently under construction" vBulletin error message.
Been down over 2 hours now and that's on a clean board with no hacks or template mods installed. How long is it going to take the rest of us to upgrade?

when I move servers, I point the new dns to the old ip... and set the times low (760 vs. 84600)..... close forum on new server, change domain nameserver settings, once propagated, close the forums on old server, change dns to new ip, dump database, restore database, and wait a few minutes....
Nothing lost... downtime measured in minutes. A very few people continue to see the 'closed' message on old server because their isp's are cacheing too long, but most switch over according to ttl. After a few days, I raise the ttl to a 'normal' setting.
