It's not a good idea to overwrite an options variable. I suggest:

PHP Code:

if ($pmmaxchars != 0 and $bbuserinfo['usergroupid'] == 6)
{
    $maxcharsjs = 0;
}
else
{
    $maxcharsjs = &$pmmaxchars;
} 


...then use $maxcharsjs in the template instead of $pmmaxchars.
