All you have to do is to change the check for premium to check for the usergroups that you use. You would skip the control panel part and only make changes to the member.php, user.php, and global.php.
Just instead of checking if $bbuserinfo[premium] you check to see if $bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == X (X = your premium user group.)
