subforums on forumhome...
Is there hack for this which does not add a query or two per sub forum?! I was thinking more along the lines of adding ONE or MAX TWO queries if there are any subforums, if no subforums, no queries...there's a few hacks out there to show subforums but they add loads of queries. Also, I don't want the one with a drop down menu, I just want them listed

To not add any queries at all, just edit the description of the parent forum, and put in <a href="http//..."> the URL to the subforums in the description to link to them. Any other way will add queries.

Doh that's the problem, I know how to hardcode them in etc. but it would make my life so much easier if they were to appear automatically, but I do not want to add many queries...

well with a sort of hacking you can make it half hardcoded ^^
say: it won't add any queries to forumhome, but you have to hack admin/forum.php and have to add another field to forum-table. then it would be possible..... |

<a href="http://www.woltlab.info/dl/wbb1.1.1e.zip" target="_blank">http://www.woltlab.info/dl/wbb1.1.1e.zip</a> - look at _functions.php - the function is getSubboards() . i can't quite figure it out 'cause i can't find where $boardcache is set.

nicksaunders: That's exactly my point, I've seen all the hacks for subforums and they all add insane amounts of queries!

nick i don't know the wbb board, and don't have enough time to go through the code...
but perhaps they use another DB structure. vb saves all parent forums in the forumtable, maybe wbb saves all subforums in the table. that would also be the trick i'd advice you to add.. save all subforums into the forumtable as a new field, than you can add those links without additional queries on forumhome. but you have to edit the forum, php to change the behaviour of editing/adding new forums... |
