Issues with the site or spam? ...If I were you, I'd leave the site on and just disable new registrations . This way forum stays active, bots can crawl all over it too and no loss in ranking .
*Still keep it updated if a security patch comes out otherwise if vulnerable the bots will be crawling a defaced site possibly.
...Or if its that bad make it where you have to approve each registration as an admin.
