That's a fairly straight-forward template edit.

The template(s) that you want to edit all are named forumhome_forumbit_level... The variable you want is $forum[statusicon]. This has a value of either "old" or "new"

You can use it as text, or?a more-interesting way to use it is to define a class on the "A" tag that surrounds the forum title. Like this:

<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]" <if condition="$show['forumdescription']">title="$forum[description]"</if> class="$forum[statusicon]">$forum[title]</a>

Then in the CSS, you can change the styling of the listing, based on its status. I also added the following to my CSS:

a.new:after {content:'NEW';background-color:#f00;color:#fff;font-size:.5em;margin-left:.125rem;border-radius:.66em;padding-left:.375em;padding-right:.375em;font-style:normal;position:relative;bottom:.25em;}
