Default How To Fix The Godaddy php upload Limit

I have been scratching my head for 2 days trying to use RS_Jelle DownloadsII addon with Godaddy under Linux. (yes I know what some will say about GoDaddy).

When upload a file it will not accept it unless the file is 2mb or smaller. Yes I tried all the permissions and settings in DownloadsII for the various extensions, I set it at 50mb even more for zip files etc and still no solution. I set the groups permissions, just about everything was tried.

What I learned: Forget all the posts you read about using ".htacccess" file and adding code into it.
That just crashes your forum instantly with a 500 error. You then need to go in via the CPanel and edit out all the code to get your forum working again.

THE REAL SOLUTION:

1) Make sure you have your vbulletin addon setup to be able to send files of the type and size you want.

2) Go into Godaddy Cpanel and into files and go into the "Public_Html" root folder and using the cpanel create a file called ".user.ini" (Remember the "." in the front.) This file is made directly in the Public_Html folder and not any sub folder.

3) Now edit the file and add this code to the file

file_uploads = On
post_max_size = 50M
upload_max_filesize = 50M

3A) Now Save the file.

This assumes you want 50mb as the maximum. You can change it to what you want but I think the entry level accounts are 32mb and the level 2 are 128mb. I have level 2 but opted to keep the uploads to a max of 50mb. Call GoDaddy if you want to upgrade your account, but I am sure it will cost a few extra $ per month.

Up to this point I have seen some of the above on the Internet but it still did not work. The next bit was what made it work.

4) Now that you have the file in place go back into the first page of CPanel and at the top right you will have a search area. Type in PHP in the search. On the third row of results you should see "php processes", Click it and at the top right you should see "Kill Processes". Press it to kill the current processes.

5) Go back to the main panel and in the search type in "php" again and look down to the 4th Row and you should see "Select php Version" Press that.

6) If your current version shows as 5.3 your already good to go and can skip the next steps.

7) If it shows 5.4 or 5.5 then you need to use the drop down button next to your version number and select 5.3 then press "Set As Current" and then Press "Save".

8) Now exit and you should be good to with uploading files to the size you set in the .user.ini or whatever limit your account has. If your unsure call Godaddy and they will tell you what your limit is.

Hope this helps someone, I teared out my hair trying to get this to work. I was also lucky enough to talk to a great tech at GoDaddy named Andrew who lead me on the right path.

Edited...

@Good Info @robbyg. Props on that. I didnt knew that about Godaddy's CPANEL. I have been using the old Plesk Like Panel on Godaddy and still are using it.

Here is how you create your own ini File on Godaddy's Old Plesk CPanel:

When you Purchase a Godaddy Hosting Panel with the OLD Plesk Like CPanel, Then as Default you will have a file called php5.ini n your root. And believe me, in some cases you wont see the php5.ini as Default. It happens and it has happened to me a few times befor.

1) If you dont see the php5.ini, then Create a new php5.ini and add it in your root.
2) Since many are still on the old CPanel/Plesk on Godaddy' such as myself. You have to create php5.ini which will be very usefull in future.
3) After you have added the php5.ini file in root of your hosting. Then the same content as @robbyg exaplained above inside your php5.ini file.

Example:

file_uploads = On
post_max_size = 50M
upload_max_filesize = 50M

Save the file and Upload it back in your root. The php5.ini works just like the user.ini in Godaddys CPanel Hosting or the php.ini and has been very usefull to me. The number 5 in php5.ini is for PHP Versions above 5 on Godaddy.
