Remove/disable avatars in activity stream?

This will not disable the avatars, nor will it prohibit the data from the source files, but it is an easy solution.

Add to the bottom of your additional.css

Code:

li.activitybit .avatar {
  display: none;
}

li.activitybit .content.hasavatar {
  margin-left: 2px;
}
