Default Dumb Question

Hey guys,

this is my first vbulletin forum setup and I have what I would imagine is a really stupid question.

My install is v4.2.1 and Ive been searching around for different themes, found and downloaded two through this site but the versions are one before what I have and I am unable to install.

What are my options?

1) Install a previous version of vbulletin and install appropriate theme? If so, where do i get access to old versions?

2) Wait for new themes to release

3) Something I dont know about

4) design a new one

Am i being really dumb and missing something simple or is this a valid question?

If the theme is not completely outdated, you can try the option "ignore style version" while uploading the xml file. See if the theme works without any problem. However, avoid trying this on a live board as it might create problem if its really old and outdated theme.
However, waiting for new themes, or designing your own aint bad options either, since that way you would have supported versions of themes

If your going to use a older theme, besides what FM pointed out, also be aware that some templates may be missing added code from the vb version change, whether its a security related change (typically not) or a added hook location etc.

Until you are familiar with vbulletin I would suggest you NOT run anything unless it says it's for your version or, offers full support for making the changes that will allow the older version to run smoothly. Even then you may not be completely happy with the outdated style.

Most importantly, before you make any template changes, copy the original code and save a copy of it. Doing this one thing will save you more headaches that a ton of aspirin.

Don't be in a rush. Rushing a project only tends to allow mistakes.

Make friends that know or have been around vbulletin quite well. The mods/admins on this site are the best of any I've seen or worked with.

Dumb questions are only those that aren't asked. Unless you were born with vbulletin stuck up ya butt, I promise you'll have lots of questions.

Use the online vbulletin manuals. If the manual looks like there's to much to read and you don't want to spend all that time reading, them I strongly suggest you change over to e107 or Wordpress ..... any dummy can operate those.
