You probably grabbed the wrong htaccess, try this one. If you use friendly urls, add those rewrite rules in there somewhere.

If you are having this much trouble i think it would be best if you advertised in the paid modifications section and asked for someone to do these things for you. It would be a lot easier and less stressful for you.

Templates...etc are already cached, you can leverage caching of images and static content using .htaccess as pointed out in one of the first posts in this thread.
