There is an option in VSa - Advanced Permissions Based on Post Count that allows you to set a "Minimum post count user must have to be able to view links and images". It's not exactly what you are looking for, but you could set it to "1" so that only members with at least one post can view external links.
The search term you want is "hide". Titles Only. Mods Only That turns up a number of modifications that sort of do what your asking. Hide Hack comes the closest. There is also a Hide Links for Guests hack, but it's for vB3. I don't see any specifically for vB4, but Hide Hack comes close.

All you do is ask, does it do this or does it do that. The mod is free, so why don''t you download it and find out for yourself if it works on your version or not.
There's really not much of a difference between versions after the second decimal point. 4.2 is pretty much 4.2. Still, take the same precautions you would when installing any modification for the first time.
