You can remove the friends block....but it'll leave behind an extra divider bar as it isn't designed for that (you'd need to find the adequate template to remove it). But you'd add

div.friends_mini
{
display:none;
}

I like to be as helpful as I can, but I really recommend you try to learn how to do these type of edits. They really are not that difficult if you understand HTML/CSS and how to properly use your browser's web developer tools (Firebug for example if you use Firefox). And I do apologize. I know I seem really noob-ish. A lot of the stuff you saw in additional.css, though, were things I figured out.
