You can also set this preference for all existing users in:
Admin CP -> Import & Maintenance -> Execute SQL Query

Run the Posts - Newest First option in the menu.

You must have permission to run SQL Queries to run this script. You can give yourself permission by editing /includes/config.php and changing:
$canrunqueries = '';
to $canrunqueries = '1';
