hear hear! That's a good idea. We have a similar problem of users continually creating dupe accounts with false names and ripping the **** out of each other.
I'd like to see some kind of investigation-toolkit hack to help with tracking down people using several names.

At the moment you can do it manually but it's a lot of clicking about. There's unfortunately not a way of simply pushing a button and finding out who really owns the false name, but it would be nice!

This is the method I use manually:

(this is based on the principal that someone will come on to my board logged in as their real name, make some posts, then log out and back in again as the psudonym and make some posts. or vice-versa). You end up with a collection of posts from the psudonym and a collection of posts from the real user separated by only a few minutes, and no overlap of post times.

  • do a search for all posts by the psudonymn user.
  • look at the post times and open one post in a new window for each period of logon time.
  • check the ip of each post and write it down
  • go into admin panel and do a find-more-users-for-this-ip on each IP address each in a new window
  • line the windows up and look for recurring names!! this is the hard bit because lots of people will use the same ISP or work for the same company and therefore behind the same proxy etc.
  • if you have a few matches go back tot he board and search for all posts by the suspected users. then manually check the post times and IPs and hopefully you can get them!

See it sucks really! What is needed is someway of view all this info on 1 page at once in the admin panel.
** Be able to feed in the dodgy username and get all the IPs / Logon times.
For each IP provide a list of other users who used that IP on that particular day. pretty much imediately you'd be able to spot a match of one username that would keep on cropping up - and there's your man!

(would like to see some way of that being done in the future by some kind of cookie that lets people register a new name and then secretly sending back to the board the other name that they use?)

So, can anyone put together a tool like that?
What's the bets that there is a much easier way of doing this but I only know the hard way haha
