thanks for pointing me in the right direction, after going to
AdminCP > Settings > Options > User Registration Options > Default Registration Options > Thread Display Mode

i realized what mode i need. From their i just had to look for where else i can select that

AdminCP-Settings-options-Threaded / Hybrid Mode Options (showthread) is where it was

It was set that if none was selected to make it Linear and man did that mess up everything. Thanks again guys.
