sitemap generation question
I have vbulletin 4 publishing suite. there is an option in acp about sitemap generation. There is an option of "sitemap path" which I am not really getting what to put.
Here is the description: "XML sitemap data must be written to the filesystem to function. Enter the full path to the directory the files should be written to. Do not include a trailing slash. This directory must be writable by the webserver." I just want my sitemap to be at mysite.com/sitemap.xml |

You must enter the full path (not relative). Let's assume you have your forums installed as:
http://www.yoursite.com/forums/ I.E. your entire vBulletin install is located under the forums subdirectory of your web root. Go into the forums subdirectory and create a directory called sitemaps Be sure to chmod 777 the sitemaps folder... If you can't 777, use 755. Your sitemap files would now be visible under http://www.yoursite.com/forums/sitemaps Now, I don't know who your hosting provider is, but I use HostGator and the full directory to my sitemap folder is: /home/myaccount/public_html/forums/sitemaps This is the path you put into the sitemap options in vBulletin. If you're going to upload your sitemap to Google's webmaster tools vBulletin uses a script called xmlsitemap.php to serve your sitemap files So, the path you would give to Google would be http://www.yoursite.com/forums/xmlsitemap.php Regards, ErnestA. |

then go put that name in the xmlsetup spot it will not allow you to put something it cannot use , will tell you the path is not writable you can play with sitemap/ /sitemap sitemap its going to be one of those and should be just sitemap oh and if you dont want it to be down everytime you go to google and look .. make it update automaticlly daily, this sitemap generator works only half the time ..it sucks thats why people spend 400 bucks on VBSEO and vbsitemap |

Sorry to bump such an old thread but this one has good info in it. I am currently using vbSEO and the default sitemap program for my forum but I can't view the sitemap when I enter the path in the address bar.
www.forum.com/sitemap for example I am getting an error message that says "403 Forbidden you do not have access to the server" or something like that. I am concerned I am not generating sitemaps/or the search engines can't see them. I made sure I CHMOD 777 the /sitemap directory too |

Go to admincp > sml sitemap > rebuild site and look for where it says "The sitemap will be accessed by search engines via this URL." Click that link - that is what the search engines see.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> - <sitemapindex xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"> - <sitemap> <loc>http://www.mensalmanac.com/xmlsitemap.php?fn=vbulletin_sitemap_forum_0_11.xml </loc> <lastmod>2011-03-23T01:00:09-07:00</lastmod> </sitemap> - <sitemap> <loc>http://www.mensalmanac.com/xmlsitemap.php?fn=vbulletin_sitemap_thread_1_18646 .xml</loc> <lastmod>2011-03-23T01:01:11-07:00</lastmod> </sitemap> </sitemapindex> |

Im trying to do this also, and it is giving me this error message.
and then telling me Creation of one of the sitemap files failed. Please check the permissions on the sitemap directory. Once you have done this, remove the sitemap session and try again. everything is set to 0777 |
