PHP is not allowed in templates. Only HTML and specific template conditionals are allowed in templates.
To do this you need to go into the Admin CP -> Plugin Manager... Add a New Plugin... Select a suitable "hook" location and enter the code you have above, minus the <?php and ?>. Then in the template you can put $files and see the output. |
