I have heard post icon, status icon, forum marker, etc. What is what?

I hate the envelopes, what are those called so I can change them? Also, when a member adds an icon to their thread, how do I get it to automatically show up next to the envelope?

This is so weird that the icons are showing up on the forums page but not new posts.
