Default WARNING, new email virus spreading fast

Quote:
A fast-moving email worm that began spreading on Thursday has been able to affect hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide, anti-virus provider Symantec warned.

The email arrives with the subject ?Here you have.? An executable screensaver that's disguised as a PDF document then tries to send the same message to everyone listed in the recipient's address book. The .scr file is a variation of the W32.Imsolk.A@mm worm Symantec discovered last month.

If you don't recognize the sender or the message title normally does not apply to you then don't open the email, send to Trash or mark & move to junk folder.

Also fyi since some simply do not know... there are Fake PayPal emails that are sent out every so often as well. At a former employer we once received one from "Wachovia" which had legitimate page links etc but the one page to request your new username and password was a sham.

The rest of you... no matter how enticing the email title sounds to you don't open it .

Google: Social Engineering and there's your answer to why it's done on a daily basis, currently it's a multi-million a year "industry" per say.

the issue with this worm is that it does come from someone you know, if you're on an infected users distribution list, then you get the email

but I do agree, if the link isn't one you know, don't click it

One version of the spam e-mail simply says, "Hello: This is The Document I told you about, you can find it here" and includes a link that appears to be a pdf document.

Another version of the worm includes the subject "Just For you" and says "This is The Free Dowload Sex Movies, you can find it Here."
I'm pretty much protected from this one.. the people I know don't write like semi-retarded chimps.

Fool proof method to avoid stuff like this (except for those who do office work etc). Go into gmail YES GMAIL and configure it to send any mail with an attachment straight to the trash. This eliminates like 90 percent of attacks right there. And for the rest... if you don't recognize the sender/subject, trash it.

*also by default, gmail should not automatically load images so use this to your advantage and when you click on show details you can definitely tell if it's spam or not...
