Your way is better, PPN, for users that don't really know their way around vBulletin yet, so it's easier to see the changes in vBulletin without the hacking.
But for me it's just easier, and also takes less time.
Its very quick if its just a bug fix release but when it was from 2.0.3 to 2.2.0 I simply re-installed the hacks it was far simplier as there was so many new bits of code and changes due to the security audit taking place.
Not sure if any of you use UltraEdit for HTML/PHP/programming code (I LOVE IT!), but the newest versions have a compare utility built right in, and I BELIEVE it's based on Beyond Compare

The only problem I find with this method is I haven't written down most of my code changes.
