Hi,

You should seperate it into some folder images as VBB does like button, misc etc. And sure, what you want to replace, use the same name as VBB does.

You can replace almost images and the skins just need to modify templates, CSS.

The templates and CSS can be modified by admincp, what and where must be edited you should read the other post. The best way to practice is view source and search in templates =D

You can use default style to edit then export to xml.
