Looks good, but slightly confused.

As we have a license type that is renewed each year, presumably a Leased license...

What is the upgrade path for us, if we want the suite ?

It is all very confusing, but looks like real functionality, and eye candy could be the go

One question - most of us will have mods etc attached to our boards, and reading between the lines (correct me if I'm wrong), they are unlikely to work...given some of the addons are "critical" to my forum, are we going to have to wait until the coders translate them over ? Or, will they work on 4.0 ?

Not migrating until I know at least some of the core mods I require will work, or at any rate, have had access to a VB demo site running 4.0
No, custom modules will definately not work. We will have to wait for their authors to update/rewrite them.

I think many questions can be answered by reading the following:

vBulletin 4 Series Development Update
The vBulletin 4 project is progressing quickly and we are in a position to share some further information about what to expect in our next new major version release.

In August, we announced a major overhaul of the code base. Rather than targeting all of these changes in a single, long-term release, we intend to accomplish all the planned improvements over a number of versions. In order to achieve this goal, the largest vBulletin development team ever assembled is now working within an Agile development process, allowing us to deliver new features into your hands faster.

Each incremental release in the vBulletin 4 series will include improvements in features, usability and architecture. Development efforts are prioritized towards those areas that can provide real, tangible benefits to our customers, at all times with an eye toward maintaining and enhancing the performance and reliability expected of a vBulletin product.

The goal of the vBulletin 4 series is to develop a modern, scalable application platform that will allow your communities to thrive.

Key features and improvements that will be included in the first vBulletin 4 release are:

* Cross-content search system providing a single interface to search across forum posts, blog entries and comments and other supported products
* Improved search performance
* A fresh design and layout making use of semantic markup and CSS styling
* An enhanced style and template system to enhance your ability to change the layout
* Controls to assist with the placement of advertising elements
* SEO features, including friendly URLs
* A centralized attachment system, allowing the sharing of attachments across products

Alongside significant strides forward within the vBulletin forum product, we are also producing a new content management system to facilitate the creation, editing and publishing of non-forum pages. Further details about CMS features, and how it will integrate with vBulletin will be posted in due course.

We are working hard and plan to have vBulletin 4.0 released in beta form in early Q2 of 2009.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continuing support of vBulletin. We are really excited about version 4, and we're looking forward to bringing you further updates via general announcements and periodic development blog posts focusing on individual areas.

I do not care about the "look" of a CMS. What I care about in a CMS is functionality, if it's easy to use, good coding (back & front), easy to update etc. The design in the templates can be done by any graphic designer, you do not need vbulletin for that. In fact, it's best if vbulletin keeps de default design as simple as possible (Google style) and then make it very easy to work with the xhtml and css in templates so customers can build their own layouts.
I totally agree with the comment above.

VB4 is the best CMS tool out there, I am really happy and I do not care about the Default boring template, it has been always boring. Guy have a look to the new features page, come on, it rocks !!!!

The only sad issue for me is that there is no an ONLINE DEMO yes, this is a bit frustrating for all of us.

5 screenshoots are not enough, please provide online demo and you will see all of these guys loving it!

I really don't like the look of VB4, but then again...when does the bare bones of any forum software look good? Vbulletin, wordpress, phpbb, IPBBoards, they're all ugly until skilled designers customize it and create attractive templates.

I'm sure I'll be upgrading to VB4, but it's a question of 'when.' I'm sure it'll take some time for designers and coders to adjust to VB4's structure, let alone take some time for there to be mods released for it.

I'm excited about the new features, but I'm not excited at all about the design and lack of modifications. I'll upgrade once there are good skins and mods available.
