Default Changing to new server

Hi guys,

Been a tad quiet of late, apologies. Its all Gerry ( UkBusinessLives ) fault, since his post regarding a plotter, we have subsequently setup an entire print shop lol.

Anyhoo..

our server is based in USA. We have decided to shift the forum, onto one of our Aussie servers, and really and truthfully, would like a Nuts n Bolts breakdown, of the best way to transfer a forum, to new server.

The latest DB is a little over 500mb, this is the bit thats scaring me the most. I realise we can view the transferred site, prior to switching Nameservers, to allow us to test functionality etc...

But is there a PROPER method.

I really dont want to assign this task to our US server guys, and really dont want our Aussie server guys to get involved, so will be doing a DIY job.

In essence, this is what I was gonna do in this order.

1. make a backup of DB, and download it locally, using FTP
2. download all forum stuff from our US server, locally using FTP
3. then upload it all....
4. create new identical database, and this is the bit that worries me, is uploading 500mb of database, without timeouts... etc

Is there a more efficient means?
Should I be doing this differently....

I realise we need at some point to shut the forum down, for an extended time..

Regards Ste

Thats the way I always do it. You may also want to look at uploading your database via SSH(?)

ok, sorry to bring up this old thread, but i have this issue and i already moved servers, the problem i have is that i already switched servers, and i have 2 forums on the previous host so i switched over 2 forums in thier entirety, it was a cpanel backup and restore so everything was done for me
my base forum - hiphopnetwork.net/forums/ - /public_html/forums/ everything went well and i was able to login after transfer and i'm very happy with.....

however i host an addon domain with thier own license and i tech for them - hiphopnetwork.net/globalemcee.com/ and everything seems to have went well except after the transfer i am unable to login to the vbulletin control panel or the site for that matter
this is all on my new server on a site that is not live but i need to find out the issue before i can switch the domain and shut down the old site's hosting

i found this note mentioned
Quote:
Warning:
Specific cookie domains (Cookie Domain) and cookie paths (Path to Save Cookies) may cause problems if you are moving servers and changing the URL to your forums.

If you are unsure whether your cookie settings will cause problems after the move, we recommend resetting your cookie path to / and removing any cookie domain value before the move. An incorrectly set cookie domain or path will likely prevent you from accessing your control panel.
but that's all set to default on both vbulletins, so i'm not sure what's causing the 2nd one to not be able to stay logged in, it does say, "thank you for logging in" but then returns to a non logged in screen, also tried clicking "remember me"

=========================EDIT - NEVERMIND ================

Issue resolved, i'm just going to post the link that helped me resolve the issue in case someone else has the same problem

thanks again vbulletin.org staff
