Custom Usergroups & Member Search
A subset of my forum members belong to a particular military association. I set up a forum for them, restricting access to those who are paid-up members of the association.
To accomplish this, I created two custom Usergroups. One for Association Members and one for Association Officers. The Sub-Forums I created for them are all accessible to the Association Members but the "Officers Club" Sub-Forum is accessible only to the Association Officers. All this is working fine, when I set the Primary Usergroup to the appropriate type. HOWEVER, the Members Search tool will not locate these guys now. I run v 3.7.4. I did remember to check "Registered User" under the secondary Usergroups. I'm reluctant to move up to a more current version, as there doesn't seem to be an automated way to save all the hundreds of custom settings. Did I go about this all wrong? I'm trying to avoid the use of passwords by simply defining which Usergroup(s) can have access to this one forum area. Thanks |

I don't know what you mean that the Members Search tool won't locate them. *What* Members Search tool?

Sorry about my vagueness, Lynne. If I click on "Members List" on the top toolbar, and then on "Search Members" at the far right, and then on "Advanced Search" at the bottom of that popup, that's where I search for members by last name.
Nobody on our site is anonymous, they all have Usernames, but all their real names are in their User Profiles (UserCP's). In any case, once the Primary Usergroup is changed to one of these Custom Usergroups, with Registered Users checked below, then this search menu isn't locating them. Of course as an Admin, I can still find them, but other users wouldn't. Part of this forum's purpose is to allow old warriors to locate brothers they served with long ago. So the Search Members feature is extremely important. Thanks |

So you have a custom profile field for users to enter their real name and when you enter the name of any of these users in that particular usergroup, you don't get results. In Usergroup Manager > select that usergroup, what do you have it set to under Viewable on the Memberlist? And how about under Allow Users to have Member Groups?

That fixed the problem Lynne!!!!!!!
THANK YOU I just had to find that "Viewable on the Memberlist" option you pointed out. Thank you so much for the assist. This will help to reunite lots of old friends. Last June I saw half a dozen at a reunion, that I hadn't seen in over 40 years. Regards |
