Very often templates don't change between versions. If you see a change, it could be another template on the page that was changed. Or, it could be the code that spits out a variable in the template that changes.

But each /groups.php is totally different. Or should I be looking at the templates that are inserted into the groups_overview?

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you are looking to do, but you need to find the template that spits out the information you want to alter. Then you want to alter the template to spit out the information the way you want it spit out.
