How do they do this? Display forum response count

On the article at the very bottom... it says discuss:

And if you'll see the discussion link is actually to the forum.

I'm wondering how they auto create the link in the forum / also display the number of comments.

Thoughts?

I want to combine this feature in my Wordpress blog... thoughts? I basically want to circumvent Wordpresses commenting feature and use the forum as the place to discuss.
