New Posts Aging
I've had a user make a request...please see below.
When I click the New Posts link on the top of the page at any other site, it will show all posts that have been made that I have not looked at. It will show these until I either look at them or until I use the Mark Forums Read link under the Quick Links. That way, I don't miss a post that I may want to look at. It appears to work now by showing me the new posts, but then when clicked again, it only shows me the new posts since the last time I clicked the New Posts link. So if I hadn't seen posts 1-10 and I decide to look at post 6, when I click the new posts link it will only show me anything from 11 on, as opposed to posts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11+ I'm using VB 3.74 and VBadvanced. Ive checked through the CP and cannot see how I can accomodate him so far. I just know I'm missing something obvious. Any help would be appreciated. Regards |

vboptions > general settings > thread/forum read marking type
The type your user is talking about is the database marking system. It sounds like you are using the cookie/inactivity based type. |

Thank you for the quick reply.
Any experience on how much resources switching to the other two options would consume? Michael |

We just recently switched over to the database marking and didn't notice any change at all in server loads. But, I run the site on two servers (one webserver, one mysql) and have them pretty well optimize. Make sure after you switch modes that you tell your users to hit the Mark Forums Read the first time they come on the site after you switch.

Lynne:
Many thanks for the help. I will work on this, and hopefully our members appreciate it. It's only one person requesting it so far, so I may wait until more ask for the option. Regards Michael |
