I remember my first computer class in 7th grade (1983). The only reason the school had a computer class is that the woodshop teacher went out and spent $10,000 dollars of his own money on two Apple IIe computers, a shared printer, monitors, drives, and software. Those were fun days... Playing Oregon Trail got me an A in computer science.
As for the Vic20. My dad bought that one day on the way home from work. Now my dad is not an impulsive shopper by any means but he saw this and felt that his kids needed to learn how to use computers. Of course he probably changed his mind when he came home one day and the television was showing this seizure inducing mass of colored blocks from my first self-written program.

But those were the early days of PC's and it was us shoppers that kept the dream going, I think that it was the president of IBM that once said that PC's would never kick off in the home
Can't imagine how many times he kicked himself over that comment lol
