Default Upgrading from 3.6 to 3.8 help...

Hi,

I want to upgrade and move servers at the same time. I have never done an upgrade before from 2 different versions so it is new to me. I have read the upgrade instructions but there are still things I have a problem with.

1: When moving 2 a new server, without doing any upgrade or changes what so ever... I know there are still thinsg I would need to change to make it work. What files do I need to change (for exp: htaccess, or point to new server location).

2: When upgrading, im sure that most of my mods will not work with the new version or at least I would need to upgrade those mods to be compatible. Because of this I would probably need to make a clean install of VBulletin and then add all the mods I would need. On the other hand If I remove all the mods and do a clean install I would still not be able to just keep the clean database because ti will have data of mods I used. How do I check for the original VB database files and the ones from the mods just so I copy them separetly and then add them when I upgrade the mods? For example, I would want to keep the Itrader records and probably other things.

Any info on any of the above or whatsoever regarding upgrading or backing up the database? Any information will be helpfull that will get me a better and error prof upgrade like ways to do it or software to use.

Thank You!

My way, copy all the FTP files over and import the database. You can backup the FTP by dragging it on your hard drive, and the database can be backed up from your host. That should handle the move, and if you have a list of all your mods.

Go back to the threads with all your mods and check to see if it can work on 3.8 or if there is a new thread for it. You will have to go to each thread of the mod to check and see if it will be good.

If you want to clear the database and start over just download the original vB Zip then reinstall all the mods.

I would recommend upgrading after the move but it dosen't really matter.

I would *highly* suggest setting up a test site and doing a practice upgrade on there first. I just did this with my 3.6 site and several of the modifications still work. I had several custom ones I needed to modify/upgrade, but many of the ones from here worked fine. Of course, I also got to just get rid of some because they have been replaced with default vb code. But doing this on a test site and upgrading the style there first so you can just export it and then import it to the new site makes upgrading soooo much easier.

Oh great.

Do you mean I should change the style on my 3.6 that would be compatible with 3.8 when i do upgrade?

Yes you should change your style. Many of the templates were changed for 3.7/3.8 and you would not see the addition of some of the features if you didn't upgrade your templates. In fact, some inclusions of files are in the templates and you will break some parts of your site if you don't modify the templates (the editor comes to mind which needs a new file included in the headinclude template).

OkI got an idea of what to do with the database and mods but if I install the new style for 3.8 before upgrading, won't my current 3.6 forum function wrong?

Also, If I have made changes to the original vb files with some of the mods, will all those changes disappear after a upgrade? Seems as though I would need to reinstall the mods either way.

Thanks

You can install the new style after upgrading to vBulletin 3.8.

You do not need to reinstall any modifications that are made through uploading an XML file.

Impex is for importing other types of boards into vBulletin (like phpBB to vbulletin). You don't need it for doing an update on your vBulletin site.
