If you want to keep the cells as is and just apply code, you can use javascript to do onmouseover and onmouseout effects as well a create conditionals to keep certain cells highlighted based on the page the user is viewing.
Search "onmousover background color change" or something like that for more info on creating the effect itself within cells. If you're good with css, you can also just change the nav over to css and apply styling and conditionals accordingly as well.
