I'm not sure of any actual benchmarks, but i can tell you that vBulletin definitely runs better (especially under optimum server configs) from personal experience.

Also, it runs super smooth when you split the DB server and Apache server. I never had to run phpBB under those conditions (split servers) so I can't exactly comment on its performance then.
