How do folks attract members to your forums? When you first started out, did you pay for advertising? What made it take off? Any tips or tricks, for those of us just starting out?

We did a lot of signature advertising. We just signed up on sites similar to ours and posted so that users can see the link in our sig. However, we did not spam boards, we just posted regularly.
